Manikin Camera tutorial

360 Orbit Mode

So lets start of with the basics, all you have to do is hold the right mouse button and drag and you’ll see the camera starts orbiting around the figure ( On mobile drag with one finger ) We call this the default camera mode, the 360 orbit ​ When orbiting around you’ll notice the camera is focused on the middle of the manikin. You can change this focus point by selecting any other body part. When we move the camera now, it will orbit around your last selection. ​ This will help you a lot with posing each specific part of the manikin. As it lets you quickly switch between focus points to adjust different parts of the model. ​

>> TIP

When the eye icon in the bottom is broken you are working in 360 mode. when it becomes a full/normal eye you are working in Freelook mode.

How to use saved view and sides menu

Side views

Another great feature is the ability to quickly align the camera to different sides of your selection. So in the top menu bar on the eye. ​ So to align your view, you’ll find these buttons that allow you to set the camera to the front, left, right, up and down camera views. ​

These views are especially useful when you want to move a body part in a particular direction. For example, when we’re in the front view, we can move the hand left or right & up or down, but not to the front or the back. This effectively constrains the placement of the hand into 2 dimensions instead of three, enabling us to be more precise. ​

The first buttons are used to save a view. Hold them for one second to save and tap to load.

Let’s say we want to move the hand a little more to the front. You can then quickly align the camera to a side view and move the hand from there. When our camera is aligned like this we can move the hand to the front or the back and up or down, but not to the sides. Because dragging is determined by the camera angle. ​ Manikin also offers shortcuts to these buttons by pressing the Alt key and dragging the mouse in a horizontal or vertical direction. For example by dragging left, you activate the left view. … ​ With these shortcuts you can access the front, left, right and up view, but not the bottom camera view. ​

How to use freelook mode

Manikin also features another camera mode called freelook. You enter freelook by activating this button in the view menu. ​ When the freelook mode is enabled the camera will not orbit around a focus point, but instead, it allows you to move freely around in the scene. ​ Use the arrow keys on your keyboard ( mobile : two finger drag )  to pan left, right, up and down, hold the RMB (mobile one finger drag) to look around and the scroll wheel (mobile : pinch ) to move the camera forward and backward. ​ With this camera you can make any composition you want.

Let’s say for example we would like to have a closeup.

We use the scroll wheel to move close to the manikin, pan with the arrow keys to get in position and finally we use the RMB to adjust our camera angle. And lowe and behold here’s your final frame. ​

Field of view & making changes

You can also control the field of view of the freelook camera. With this slider you can change the active lens from zoomed to ultra wide. ​ So let’s say this is the frame I want, but I would like to adjust a body part a little bit more. You can still do that from within freelook by just clicking & dragging the body part you want to move. ​ But you can also switch back to the 360 mode by clicking again on the freelook button. The view switches back to our default mode so we can move around our figure to make adjustments.

Once we’re done, click on the camera mode button again to switch back to our freelook camera. ​

How do you use the effects to change your scene


The last section in the view menu contains different options to help you in your drawing. ​ For example, you can toggle the floor in the scene or activate an overlay raster. There are also various visual effects like outline, shading, silhouette and perspective focus.
